A must read for all Latter-day Saints On June 1, 1978, the First Presidency and Council of the Twelve Apostles (with the exception of Mark E. Peterson and Delbert Stapley) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints met in the Salt Lake Temple and received a revelation that ended the policy restricting men of African descent from being ordained to the Church’s lay priesthood, and allowed men and women of African descent to participate in the ordinances offered in Latter-day Saint temples. While the policy was reason to rejoice, many important questions remained unanswered, such as the following : 1) Was the policy inspired of God or socially constructed? 2) Were the rationales offered in defense of the policy valid? 3) How have blacks integrated in the Church since the policy was rescinded? As a practicing Latter-day Saint of African descent myself, I have often wondered about these questions, and wished they were discussed more openly. The essay entitled Race and the Priesthood, released in 2013, was a good start, but questions remain unanswered.Black and Mormon offers a scholarly perspective on this controversial topic, but still speaks the language of faith. In the eight essays that are included in the book, the subjects of the origin of the ban, the rationales behind it, stories of black Latter-day Saints before the ban, and the social construction of race itself are all addressed. I particularly enjoyed Alma Allred’s essay that debunked the misinterpretations of scripture that persist to this day to justify the policy. In addition, one cannot read the stories of Jane Manning James and Len Hope and not be inspired by their faith and devotion to the Church during the years before the policy was reversed. I wish that they had been able to live to see June 1, 1978.While the book gives an excellent historical analysis of the issue and shows that blacks have integrated well within the Church for the most part, it doesn’t talk much about what the Church can do now in regards to this issue. While I do not think an apology is necessary, a general conference address on this topic would be welcome, especially since many people still believe in the folklore; just this week on Facebook a young man told me that blacks were descendants of Cain and for that reason they were denied the priesthood. The LDS Church rejects this theory (as it states in the 2013 essay), but many members of the Church have not read them or are unaware that these essays even exist. A conference talk would go a long way to making sure that these discredited theories are never used as justification again.Since we will celebrate 40 years since the revelation was received in a few months, I would encourage all who can to purchase Black and Mormon so that we as a people can be better educated on this topic and drop the folklore that still persists when this issue is raised. This is not to say that you will agree with everything that is written in the book (For example, I am against Darron Smith’s idea of affirmative action for priesthood leaders), but you will come to see that the issues of race and the Church are complex and should be thought about deeply by all members of the Church, regardless of race. The Joseph Smith Translation (JST), also called the Inspired Version of the Holy Scriptures (IV), is a revision of the Bible by Joseph Smith, the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, who said that the JST/IV was intended to restore what he described as "many important points touching the salvation of men, [that] had been taken from the Bible, or lost before it was compiled."
